Liam 1 year Smash Cake…

I am so happy for Jamie and Randy! I cannot believe how big their little man has gotten! I was lucky enough to photograph this little guy while he was in his mom’s tummy and again for his newborn session. It has been a year since I have seen him and he has grown so much! It is always fun getting to see my smallest clients for their One Year Smash Cake Session! Especially, if I haven’t seen them since their newborn session. Liam still has the same little pout and pale skin, but he has grown into such an adorable little guy! Let me tell you about Liam and his Smash Cake session… This boy loved his cake! He was diving head first into it. Trying to inhale it. Shoving fistfuls in his mouth, two at a time. He could not get enough of that cake. It was a fun and messy shoot in sunny San Diego!

I almost always make my own cakes for the Smash cake session. In the beginning I had a lot of problems with it. Christian would often hear me in the kitchen screaming and pounding like a gorilla! Most of the time the problem came from the frosting. I couldn’t get it to look nice (I don’t know why I would even try considering they just ruin it). Then I realized it was the type of frosting I was using. Crisis averted. But the hardest part of frosting the oversize cupcake mold is the bottom. I am not a professional baker and I can never get it to look how i want it to. So for Liam’s session I tried out a new trick which I have yet been able to replicate (just a lot of screaming coming from the kitchen). I used those colored Wilton Candy Melts, painted them around the bottom of the cupcake mold, put it in the fridge and an hour later, voila! Flip the mold upside down, it slides out, and you can place your cake inside of it and frost the top! Much less yelling!
